When it comes to choosing a piece, all of us at Sorg Jewelers want our clients to feel completely in the loop from start to finish. Join us on this month’s dual birthstone journey as we uncover and learn about the intrigue of the tanzanite and the blue topaz.

Tanzanite: The Stone of Transformation

Tanzanite stones get their name from the singular location they can be found: Tanzania in Africa. This rare, deep blue and purple stone is known to develop strong intuition and enhance psychic abilities. Since their discovery, legends have considered tanzanites to be the stone of transformation. Physically, tanzanite is thought to strengthen the immune system; regenerate cells, skin and hair; and detoxify blood. Mentally, the stone is said to help reduce stress and manage fear. This is due to the stone’s high vibrational energy that is thought to raise the consciousness of those who purchase and wear it.

Tanzanite: The  New Kid on the Block

Tanzanite is relatively new to the colored stone rolodex. In 1967, a Masai tribesman stumbled upon a cluster of highly transparent violet-to-blue crystals in Merelani, an area of northern Tanzania. He alerted a local fortune hunter who quickly registered four mining claims. Within a short time, 90 more claims appeared in the same area. This brilliant new gem would come to be known as tanzanite, and would rival the most valuable of stones in popularity.

Blue Topaz: The Gem of Peace and Healing

Blue Topaz is known in mythology to be a gem of peace and healing. It was first found by the Romans on the Island of Topazios in the Red Sea over two million years ago. The Romans believed wearing a blue topaz could protect its wearer from enemies and bring reconciliation in any situation. The gem was also worshiped in ancient Egypt, where it was said to hold mystical powers bestowed by the sun god. In South America, many tribes believe topaz can fight sickness when the moon is full.
